GEH worked in Lahore and Northern India for a number of years as an architect for the British government in India.

My father loved India and where I think he was happiest. He spoke both Urdu and Tamil. Words like Poochie (small insect) was commonplace to me as a child. Gulabjams and jellibees (Indian sweetmeats) were in my vocabulary long before food from the subcontinent was popular over here.

GEH returned to England to train for the ministry of the Church of England at Kings College London.
