As regards Ben I well remember his visit to St Albans. I remember thinking at the time that he was a child in an adult body. Ben subsequently went to live in Scunthope in Lincolnshire looked after by a carer/carers. He died in 1946. There never seemed to be any direct reference to his condition - although JWH on occasion referred to him as a cretin  (very non-pc!). I hasten to add that it did not have the pejorative connotation that it has in French - I believe that in those days various labels were given to various  gradations of low I.Q. the term cretin being one of them. Quite clearly poor Ben (just like Margaret's elder sister Frances) suffered from Down's Syndrome.
