Her mother describes her as the cleverest of the daughters, but she suffered
from much illness and also became obese in middle age. Her husband, Robert
Bayman, was American; they married in England 29 May 1851, but returned to
Madeira afterwards and lived there for many years after her parents moved to
England. Like his father in law Joseph, Robert was a wine merchant but was also attached to the
American Consulate in Madeira, acting as Consul at various times. After her
marriage Anne bore one son who survived but also had a number of miscarriages
and stillbirths.
