The Rev. Thomas Simpson EVANS, D.D.

Born 1777

Professor of Mathematics at Christ’s Hospital.
Married 1797 Deborah MASCALL, daughter of John MASCALL, of Ashford, Kent. She d. 1832 and was buried at St Mary de Lode, Gloucester.

He died 28 Oct. 1818.

Their children were:

1.       Thomas Simpson EVANS, b. 24 June 1798; m. Jane MERRIMAN, 20 Dec. 1831; d. 30 Jan and left children.
Vicar of St Leonard’s, Shoreditch for nearly 40 years.

2.       Aspasia EVANS, b.27 Oct. 1799; d. at Burnham, Somerset, 25 Oct. 1876.

3.       Herbert Norman EVANS, M.D.; b. 22 Oct. 1802, m. Elizabeth HAINES; d. (MD) at St Leonards on sea, 10 Dec 1877 and had 15 children.

4.       Arthur Benoni EVANS, b. 18 July 1813; m. 5 June 1838 Catherine PATTISON, dau. of Rev. William PATTISON, rector of Shaftesbury. They were lost together on board the ‘PROTECTOR’ merchant ship in a hurricane off Calcutta, 18 Oct. 1838.

5.       Lewis EVANS, b.4 Feb. 1815; m. 6 Aug. 1847, Isabella Julia WILKINSON; he d. at Gloucester, 28 March 1869. They had four children. He was headmaster of the Grammar School, Sandbach.

Mascall arms -  Barry of six, or and azure, 3 in escutcheon. Ermine.
The Mascalls are mentioned in the history of Ashford at intervals from 1623 and bore the Mascall arms.
