The Rev. Thomas EVANS

Born “at 4 o’clock in the morning (moon 12 days) (from old pocket book,) 19 June 1716.
Vicar of Bassaleg 1746 - 1750. Curate of Caerleon, 1759, Master of Caerleon School, 1762.
Married at Caerleon 17 Oct. 1744 to Jane, daughter of Mr Evan JONES of Llywell in the Co of Brecon. She died 22 July 1783, aged 66. A stone to her memory is in the pavement by the South door of Caerleon Church.
He died, 27 June 1774, curate of Caerleon, where he was buried, 30 June 1774.
He opened the charity school at Groeswen, in the parish of Eglwys Ilan, Glamorgan, 8 Dec. 1742 = returned 30 May 1743, to Newport = resigned Newport School, 6 July 1748. Opened Bassaleg Free School 15 Dec 1750. Curacy of Caerleon, 14 Oct. 1759.

Their children were

1.       A daughter b. 13 Sept 1745. d. in infancy

2.       James EVANS b.13 Oct.1746. Entered at Pembroke Coll. Oxon. 13 July 1762. Student of Civil law. Ordained 18 Dec. 1768, curate of Churchdown, (?Glos.) Had a “Seminary for Ten Pupils,” Kensington Square, 1798. Curate of Leigh and Norton. (where?) Married Elizabeth Carpenter and had issue.

i)       James, Captain at Woolwich in 1824

ii)      Charlotte, m…HALLETT. Their dau. Charlotte Marie m. Robert Playdell WILTON.

iii)     Harriette, b. – d.Aug.1859

iv)     Thomas, b. – Prof. of Languages at Moscow. d. –

v)      Eliza, b.-  d. 1796. (epitaph in old pocket book.)

3.      Mary EVANS, b. 2 Jan. 1748; buried 20 Feb 1749.

4.      John EVANS, b. 5 March 1750; d. April 1950.

5.      John EVANS, b. 19 July 1752, baptized the last day of Old Style, 2 Sept.1752: the following day was
                    14 September. He became Vicar of St Woollos, Newport, Co. Monmouth 1783. His entries in     
                    the registers there cease 23 Nov. 1817.   He m. Elizabeth BUTLER, who d. 5 Dec. 1824, aged    
                    81. On the north wall of the chancel of Caerleon Church is a stone to her memory. He was
                    buried at Caerleon 9 July 1822.    

6.      Lewis EVANS, b.13 August 1753. M.A., F.R.S., Vicar of Froxfield, Wilts. m. Ann NORMAN who d. Aug
1788, leaving issue.  He m. secondly Elizabeth HOLLIDAY.

7.      Sarah EVANS, b. 19 June 1756, buried 26 July 1758.      

8.      Thomas EVANS, b. 5 August 1757. Entered Merton College, Oxford 1776. Vicar of Chipping Norton
                    1784. m. and had issue.
           i)      Thomas, b. 1802, d. 14 Jan. 1854 D.D. Sometime Head M. of College School, Gloucester.
          ii)      Catherine, b. – d. – unmarried.      

9.      Arthur Benoni EVANS, b. 24 April 1759 (“Christened 1760, Oct.14, Arthur, son of Mr Thos.  Evans and
                   Jane his wife.”) Graduated at Pembroke Coll. Oxford, M.A. D.D. of Merton College, Oxford. ;  
                   Under master of the College School, Gloucester 1784; Headmaster 1787. Died unmarried 28
                   June 1841
