 Third child, second son of Arthur Benoni EVANS and Anne DICKINSON;

Died 31 May1908

(My x 2 great uncle)

He managed John Dickinson paper mills, Apsley and was a well-known collector and historian.

John Evans is well documented.

 

Married. 1) 12 Sept. 1850, his cousin Harriet Ann DICKINSON.
She died leaving five children, 1 Jan 1858 and was buried at Abbot’s Langley, Herts.
Married  2) 23 July 1859, his cousin Frances PHELPS who died 22 Sept. 1890 and was buried at Abbot’s Langley, Herts. 
(Although she didn’t bear children herself she was by all accounts a marvellous stepmother.)
Married 3) 9 July 1892 Marie Millington LATHBURY (4 Dec. 1856 – 4 June 1944) of Wimbledon – one daughter

a) John and Harriet’s children were –

1. Arthur John EVANS, 8 July 1851 – 12 July 1941; m. 19 Sept 1878, Margaret dau. of Edward Augustus FREEMAN, D.C.L.; of Somerleaze, Wells, Somerset. She was b. 17 Oct. 1848 – d. 11 March 1893 at Alassio, Italy. Balkan war correspondent;  archaeologist, famous for excavating Knossos, Crete.

2.  Lewis EVANS, 15 Feb 1853 – 25 Sept 1930;
m. 1) 14 Feb 1884 Beryl May, dau. of the Rev Percival Seth WARD of Apsley, Herts. She was b. 23 May 1866 and d. 19 Nov. 1886, bur. at Apsley.
m. 2) Eva, dau. of Captain BRADFORD and had five children.

3.Philip Norman EVANS, 13 Dec. 1854 – 9 Dec. 1893 at Reading and bur. there on his birthday.
He m. 23 April 1887, Ada Dickinson GILBERT.

4.Alice EVANS, 9 July 1856 – 13 March 1887; m. 26 Sept 1882 William MINET (b.13 Sept. 1851 – d.1933)
They had one child Susan b. 3 March 1884.

5. Harriet Ann EVANS, 19 Dec 1857 – 20 April 1938; m. 15 July 1880, Charles James LONGMAN (14 April 1852 – 7 April 1934) Publisher.

Their children were   -
       i)  Mary LONGMAN, 29 April 1881
        ii)  William LONGMAN, 14 Nov. 1882
        iii)  Sibyl LONGMAN, 25 April 1885

iv)  Frederick LONGMAN, 9 May 1890

 

b) John and Maria’s daughter was Joan EVANS, 22 June 1893 – Sept. 1977;
(born some 42 years after her elder half-brother.) Writer, photographer and art historian
